Nancy Ford is the Director of Digital Media at Allen County College on the Iola Campus. She teaches courses based on all facets of graphic design. His passion for design helps students earn an associate’s degree, while preparing them for a successful transfer to a four-year university.

From my experience taking Nancy Ford’s classes, I learned that she has a very project-based teaching approach. When I told Ford about it, she replied, “In my classes, students need to know how to use the programs and the best way to do that is to use them. She also added: “You can read book after book, but you have to know the software and use it to discover all the possibilities. There are so many ways to get the results you want, so by using it and doing some creative projects, students can get to know the programs.

She supported this by saying, “Years ago, when I was just starting to work in this field, a mentor told me that the best way to learn about these programs was to try and do something new every day. So I was pulling different tutorials and learning new things. This was by far the best advice I have ever received, which is why I truly believe that a hands-on approach is the best.

Ford firmly believes that creativity is good for the soul! She thinks everyone needs a voice and uses her lessons as an outlet for it. She explained, “You don’t have to be a phenomenal artist to create a masterpiece.”

Graphic design is a constantly changing landscape. Ford strives to stay on top of industry standards and truly prepare students. “I have to know what is changing and how to use it, otherwise I can’t teach it!”

Finally, I asked what improvements they are making for future students. She noted the possible replacement of the Macs currently in her classroom as well as the acquisition of new Wacom tablets (a tablet that allows students to draw patterns by hand on the computer). They also just bought a Glowforge and hope to add laser printing in addition to 3D printing in the future.
