Deadline: April 21, 2022

Applications are open for the Online News Association HBCU Digital Media Fellowship 2022. Supported annually since 2014 by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, each fellow will receive free conference registration at ONA22 and a one-year membership at ONA.

Fellows will work closely with lead mentor Michael Grant, founder of Get Current Studio. They work with mentors to produce multimedia packages for the conference and are immersed in intensive digital journalism training.

The fellowship centers on a highly engaged conference experience for students, emphasizing the evolving nature of online journalism. Fellows also participate in networking and receive training from industry leaders who in the past have included Microsoft and mmhmm. Schedules are tailored to students’ particular professional interests, and they have time to attend conference sessions and networking events, where they connect with professional digital journalism innovators.

  • Scholars receive free registration for the ONA22 conference taking place September 21-24 and a free one-year ONA student membership.
  • Candidates will work closely with professional mentors throughout the four-day conference.

  • Open to students of historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs);
  • Applicants must have impressive academic and journalistic achievements.

All application materials must be submitted by Thursday, April 21, 2022 at 11:59 p.m. EDT (3:59 a.m. UTC). All applicants will be notified of their status by the end of June.
