SYRACUSE, NY – A free digital media training program for black entrepreneurs in Syracuse is started by SU School of Communication and a local non-profit organization.
Creator of black media tycoons is designed to teach digital entrepreneurship skills to potential entrepreneurs or those who have a story to tell and believe sharing it through digital media would grow their business, said Daniela Molta, assistant professor of advertising at SI Newhouse School of Public Communications
Molta and Sean Branagan, director of the Center for Digital Media Entrepreneurship in Newhouse, lead the program in partnership with the Center of Hope International, a nonprofit in Syracuse. Bishop Ronald Dewberry is the president / CEO of this center.
The 10-week program will accept 25 black participants who must live in the city of Syracuse and be motivated, creative and eager to learn, organizers said. A virtual briefing will take place on July 21 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Registration is done at https://www.cohi-inc.org/bmmm/
The program itself will run from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Mondays from September 13 to November 15 at the New Life Temple of Praise at 5013 S. Salina St. Information kiosks will also be set up on Saturday at the Urban Market in Sankofa park in the south of Syracuse. Side, and the Salt City Market the following week.
Why a Black Media Mogul Maker program? Molta said program organizers believe most media owners are white males, unrepresentative of the general population. And since the media is responsible for what people see and hear and which in turn shapes our culture, it is essential that media influencers be more diverse and inclusive, she said.
“We want to help be an agent of change by training people through this program,” she said.
The target audience for existing businesses is those who want to become a “lifestyle brand,” which often happens using digital media, Molta said. For example, Red Bull energy drinks having an entertainment brand and selling energy drinks, both of which generate income, she said.
In addition to teaching digital skills, the program will provide resources, networking and mentors. There will be a variety of national and local speakers. Participants will learn about the media landscape, how to identify opportunities, integrate the media and more.
