For streaming services, 2021 was the year of Olivia Rodrigo, BTS and Bad bunny, among others. A new year-end report from the Digital Media Association has revealed the major players in music this year with data revealing the content most consumed by artists on streaming platforms including Amazon, Apple Music, Pandora, Spotify and Youtube.

“The history of music in 2021 has been defined by incredible artists, both familiar and new, who were able to harness the power of streaming to connect with fans,” said Garrett Levin, CEO of Digital Media Association. “This year, we celebrated the gradual return of live music a year after most in-person concerts have closed, while recognizing that challenges remain.”

On Apple Music, BTS topped Best Song of the Year with “Dynamite“, Followed by Rodrigo’s hit” driving license “and Ariana Grande’s single” Positions “. Pop Smoke‘s “For the Night” and The Weeknd’s “Blinding lights”Settled comfortably in positions four and five.

Rodrigue’s Sour was named the most streamed album on Spotify while ‘driving license’ and ‘good 4 u’ turned out to be the first and fourth most played songs in 2021 on the platform, respectively. The streaming giant’s top artists were Bad Bunny, Taylor Swift, BTS, Duck, and Justin Bieber, in that order. Bieber also had the third most released album with Justice.

The weekend “Save your tearsWas the second most watched music video of the year in the United States, joined in company by “MONTERO (Call Me By Your Name) by Lil Nas X”, “RAPSTAR” by Polo G, the “driver’s license” by Rodrigo, “Up” by Cardi B “and more.

Levin added: “One bright spot amid the continued uncertainty surrounding Covid is that we have again seen a growing number of fans eager to discover new artists and follow their careers, reconnect with old favorites and listen to the artists and songwriters they love via streaming. ”
